How to Use the Wheel Spinner

The Wheel Name Picker is a free, easy-to-use random spinner designed for Australian teachers, classrooms, families, games and anyone who needs a fun and fair way to make a decision. Here's how to get started:

Step 1 — Choose Your Mode

Select a preset mode from the coloured buttons at the top. Choose from Names, Numbers, Colours, Yes/No, What's for Dinner, Venue Picker, Day Picker, Weekday Picker, or Custom. Each mode loads a ready-made list so you can start spinning immediately. Need to pick a random weekday for an activity or competition? The Day Picker has Monday through Sunday ready to go.

Step 2 — Customise Your List

Use the panel on the right to add, remove or shuffle items. Type a name or item into the input box and press Add or hit Enter. Your list updates the wheel instantly. You can add as many items as you like — the wheel automatically adjusts the segments. Perfect for adding your full class roll, competition entrants, team names or game options.

Step 3 — Spin!

Click the big SPIN button and watch the wheel go. A spinning sound plays (you can turn it off with the toggle) and the wheel slows to a stop on a randomly selected item. The result is displayed in a banner below the wheel. Great for competitions, giveaways, prize draws and classroom games.

Step 4 — Remove Picked Names

After a name is picked, click Remove from wheel to take it off so it won't be picked again. This is perfect for classroom roll calls, competition draws and games — work through the whole list without repeating anyone. Use Reset All to bring everyone back for the next round.

Why Random Is Better Than Choosing

Research in education shows that random selection in classrooms increases student engagement and attentiveness. When students know they could be picked at any moment, they stay focused and prepared. It also removes any perception of favouritism — the wheel treats everyone equally.

For competitions and games, a random spinner ensures fairness that everyone can see. Unlike drawing from a hat, the digital wheel is visible to all participants, making results transparent and trustworthy.

For families, random decision making reduces conflict and makes potentially difficult choices feel fair to everyone involved, especially children who may feel their preferences aren't being heard.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Wheel Name Picker completely free?

Yes — completely free. No sign up, no account, no downloads required. Just open the page and start spinning. The site is supported by advertising so the tool can remain free for everyone. Like our other free tools at MyCalcTools.net and MyCalendarTools.net, this is part of Ascension Digital Group's commitment to free, accessible online tools for Australians.

Is the result truly random?

Yes. The wheel uses JavaScript's built-in random number generator to determine where the wheel stops. Every item on the wheel has an equal chance of being selected, regardless of position or how many times other items have been picked. This makes it suitable for competitions, games, prize draws and classroom use where fairness is important.

Can I use it for competitions and giveaways?

Absolutely. The Wheel Name Picker is perfect for competitions, prize draws, social media giveaways and raffles. Add all your entrant names, spin live, and everyone can see the result. The pick history panel records each winner so you have a record of the draw.

Can I save my custom lists?

Your custom list is saved in your browser's local storage while you're on the page. If you close the browser your list will be cleared. We recommend keeping a copy of your class roll or competition list in a notes app for quick re-entry next time.

How many names can I add to the wheel?

You can add as many names as you like. The wheel automatically adjusts the size of each segment. For very large lists (30+ items) the text on the wheel will be small, but the result banner always shows the winner clearly.

Can I turn off the spinning sound?

Yes — use the Sound toggle in the stats panel to turn the spinning sound on or off. Your preference is remembered while you're on the page.

Does it work on phones and tablets?

Yes — the Wheel Name Picker is fully responsive and works on all devices including iPhones, Android phones, iPads and tablets. Perfect for using on the classroom smartboard, projecting during a competition, or pulling up on your phone at a party.

What are the preset wheel modes?

The preset modes are: Names (blank, ready for your class or entrant list), Numbers (1–10), Colours (8 colours), Yes/No, What's for Dinner (10 meal options), Venue Picker (10 venue types), Day Picker (Monday–Sunday all 7 weekdays), and Custom (blank). All presets can be fully edited.

Are there other free tools from the same team?

Yes! Wheel Name Picker is part of the Ascension Digital Group ecosystem. Our other free tools include MyCalcTools.net (38 free calculators) and MyCalendarTools.net (calendar and date tools including weekday finders and date calculators). More tools are launching regularly.
